*****
Kate and Anna McGarrigle are singers, musicians and songwriters of international reputation. They have performed to critical and popular acclaim throughout North America, Europe and the Far East. Their albums have earned "record of the year" awards from Melody Maker, Stereo Review, the New York Times and other authorities. And songs they have composed have been widely recorded by other artists, including Linda Ronstadt, Judy Collins, Emmylou Harris and Nana Mouskouri.
Kate and Anna were born in Montreal of mixed English- and French-Canadian background, and grew up in the Laurentian Mountains village of Saint-Sauveur-des-Monts, Québec. They took piano lessons from the village nuns, while family singing sessions around the living room piano were a regular habit.
In the 1960s, Kate studied engineering at McGill University, and Anna painting at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Montreal. At the same time, they became stars on the city's folk music scene, and soon began to compose their own songs. When some of these songs found their way into the repertoires of established artists, Kate and Anna were invited to record their own album (Kate and Anna McGarrigle) for Warner Bros./Los Angeles in 1976. The elegance of their vocal harmonies, and the variety and originality of their music, delighted critics and fans alike, and the album earned international praise.
Other albums followed, Dancer with Bruised Knees, Pronto Monto, an all-French record in 1980 (called "delightful" by Rolling Stone), Love Over and Over in 1983 ("triumphant," said the New York Times), and in 1990, Heartbeats Accelerating, where the Times said of Kate's song "I Eat Dinner," "Had Emily Dickinson been a late-20th century songwriter, this might be just the sort of piece she would have written." The title track, Anna's "Heartbeats Accelerating," became a 1994 hit for Linda Ronstadt. All of Kate and Anna's records remain in print and available in North America and Europe.
The latest Kate and Anna McGarrigle album, entitled Matapedia, was released on the Hannibal/Rykodisc label in September 1996. Early reaction has been unsually favourable, with the Toronto Star calling it "a quiet gem of an album" and The Globe and Mail "arguably their best ever."
As performers, the McGarrigles have appeared in concerts and festivals in all parts of Canada and the United States, in England, Ireland, Scotland, Denmark, Norway, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and Switzerland, and in Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong. They have performed and recorded with the Irish group, The Chieftains.
They headlined the Newport Folk Festival in 1992, toured to Britain and the continent in 1993, and returned for sold-out shows in England and Scotland in 1994 (prompting one critic to write, "They caused us to sigh and settle with pleasure as they sang...").
In 1995, they recorded with Emmylou Harris on her Daniel Lanois-produced album Wrecking Ball (with Anna's "Goin' Back to Harlan" among the album's tracks), appeared on Garrison Keillor's National Public Radio show A Prairie Home Companion in St. Paul, Minnesota, and joined Joan Baez on her live recording Ring Them Bells. They starred in the major Canada Day (July 1) show in Toronto, and again travelled to the U.S. and Europe for concert and festival appearances, including the Cambridge Folk Festival. Closer to home, they joined Québec's legendary chansonnier Gilles Vigneault on the cut "Charlie-Jos" on his latest CD, C'est ainsi que j'arrive à toi.
Their 1996 dates included concerts in Quebec City and Western Canada, while year-end tours of Britain, Canada and the U.S. are planned.
Kate and Anna have composed and performed music for several movie and television productions, including a number by the National Film Board of Canada. They were themselves the subject of an NFB, film, directed by Acadamy Award nominee Caroline Leaf.
They have been profiled by CBC and CTV television in Canada, appeared on Saturday Night Live and the Dave Letterman Show, sung in the Public Broadcasting System fundraiser, Songs of the Civil War, and starred in their own PBS special, with Linda Ronstadt and Maria Muldaur as guests.
In 1994, Kate and Anna were awarded the Order of Canada.

**************
In 1996 they released the CD Matapedia, an album of all original songs and in 1998 they followed up with The McGarrigle Hour. This last one was done in the company of family and friends, including Loudon Wainwright, Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris among others. The repertoire anywhere from the rollicking sixties drug anthem "Green Green Rocky Road" to the high society complaint of Cole Porter's "Allez-vous en." Both these CDs garnered rave reviews internationally. A year later they videotaped a concert version of The McGarrigle Hour at. the historic Monument National Theatre in Montreal which was subsequently aired in Canada on the Global Network and in the U.S. on WGBH Boston of the PBS network. In December of 1999 it was released on DVD by Hannibal/Ryko.
In 1998, they were invited by Hal Wilner to participate in a series of concerts celebrating the work of Harry Smith, the reknown eccentric, film maker and collector of American folk music. These concerts assembled an eclectic variety of artists from the pop music world among them Brian Ferry, Nick Cave, Van Dyke Parks, Jarvis Cocker and Lou Reed. These performances encouraged musical collaboration and as a result they ended up doing background vocals on Nick Cave's and Geoff Muldaur's latest releases. The next Harry Smith Project concert is being held in late April 2001, this time in Los Angeles. The first one having been held in London in 1998 and the second in New York City in 1999.
In late 2000 they were asked to sing in the Coup d'coeur francophone in Montreal, an event which is held annually to celebrate French song. They premiered some new work which they wrote with their friend Philippe Tatartcheff and are working towards their second all French recording.
At the moment they are writing music for "Les étoiles d¹Angus," a French translation by Andre Therrien of Michael Healy's award-winning play "The Drawer Boy."
